Our Research Presentation "Smart Move"

"Begin your project by describing your community. Create a list of the ways that people, animals, information, and things move in, around, to, and through your community. Search out the problems. Choose one of the problems and suggest a solution. What can be done to fix the problem? What will it take to make your team’s solution happen? How will your solution help your community? How can your team make moving from one place to another safer and easier?
Now, tell your community about the problem you researched, and how your solution can help. Your presentation to the judges can be simple or elaborate, serious or designed to make people laugh while they learn—but to be eligible for project awards at tournaments, it must:
•Describe your community, the problem, and your team’s solution
•Show that your team did the research and tell about your information sources
•Be shared with someone outside of your team
The total length of your project presentation at a tournament or qualifier should be no more than five minutes. "

This year’s research presentation was awaited with high expectations and appropriate aspirations. After all, we even reached the title “second best research presentation of Central Europe” and one of the coveted nominations for “most creative research presentation of Europe” yesteryear. “The story of success should go on”, this is how we formulated the clear target. And that’s why we yearned for the release of the mission at the beginning of September 2009. It appeared to be approximately the same what one could already suspect referring to the name of the topic “Smart Move”. The problem: intelligent logistics and connected with it the practical test to look for a preferably local transport shortage and the finding of an at least theoretically realizable solution.

Actually we already brought forward the most useful aspect (transfer of pupils) within Climate Connections, now we had to convince the qualified judges with something different, which is both a local problem and a worldwide adoptable one. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a big federal state but only a few people live here, that means our economy is not that distinct, so there were many topics at choice that, seriously spoken, can’t get optimized in a down-to-earth way. Fortunately we held contact to German Aerospace Center, a gift from former Caro Ace Pascal who momentarily spends a gap year in America and whose father works in this prestigious institution.

Ideas were exchanged via the internet, in the end we had a brainstorm: interactive tourist guide. Now it was on to plan a concept which is bursting with ingenuity and scientific substance. Why especially a guide for tourists? Because our beautiful region makes an enormous living from tourism sector, so the stay has to be organized as comfortable as possible. The idea: Before going on holiday you download a particular software, solemnly baptized as “Guidance Routing System”, and install it optionally on a high-end cell phone or on a newish navigation system, the main point is that it must master the innovative XBe©-technology which is an improvement of GPS because GPS contains the disadvantage that the used instrument can only receive data, not send it. Thanks to a steadily updating interface, the tourist, once equipped with such a handheld, is able to search for various places of interest; either events, beaches or museums and is lead to the target intelligently by means of the advantageous route planning.

Who doesn’t know them, at last? Full-crammed cities whose jams you would circumnavigate wide if you knew the surroundings sufficiently. The navigation system probably even supports TCM, but the whole of Germany suffers from time pressure and this is why all traffic participants abuse the same accounted detour until even this is no alternative for the actual jam anymore. Long waiting is pre-programmed. But bumper-to-bumper traffic is mortal for our environment! Not even remotely comprehensible carbon dioxide output, green badges back and forth. GRS doesn’t need only information from police and taxi cars as well as velocity-perceiving fairways but also from individual driving.

The thoughts are conceivable simple. Every GRS-participant is a part of the network which clients diligently send data of their temporary movements to a special server. This server handles the received streams and recommends if it is advisable to frequent a certain street at the moment. For example one can make out with the velocity of a traffic participant whether the traffic flows or not. Key word: Floating Caro Data. The possibly high-frequented system automatically refers to all available routes which connect the starting point with the arrival point, beginning with the shortest road. If the traffic is slow there, the shortest road will not be the fastest one anymore. No matter which detour the user experiences, the fluent way of driving will always bring most advantages for the respective moment. The disclosure of information surely happens on an anonymous basis. By the way: traffic experts are satisfied with velocity information from 1 of 1000 traffic participants. It is not necessary anymore to build on that the more persons avail GRS.

But there is more to it than that! Another highlight affects the spare time management. Who searches for a venue clicks through several filters which emphasize respective preferences from a bright pool of sights and institutions that use GRS as an advertising platform, inclusive of transfer route. Even the capacity is no unknown quantity. Persons in charge can access the system and let it get to know the capacities which are still on-hand. This information can be caught via light barriers, too. The privy enthusiast thinks his options over and is able to get a better idea of all of his alternatives. Is an overcrowded business conducive? Of course it is. Full employment shows quality. Those instances which profit most from our latest invention pay a little amount of money to finance the technology. Once the starting expense is hauled in again, the maintenance is realized by means of franchise resales.

GRS is becoming a brand which exclusively brings advantages for all participants, such as tourists, natives, nature, economy and state. In Third World countries it could stunningly contribute in a way that the CO2-exhaustings will not increase that much in the near future. Nobody knows how to handle the forthcoming, growing car pollution. GRS is a first step.

That is why we created a flamboyantly programmed functional model. You need four NXT robots and their Bluetooth technology to visualize the conceived scenario. One NXT is the server, the other ones are traffic participants which communicate with each other by means of the server and the steady communication enables the assignment of the best routes.
